Job Description:

Design and deploy application delivery environments for clients in AWS, Rackspace, and Unicons virtualized colo environment.  Leverage native cloud capabilities such as relational and non-relational databases, cloud storage, various security group and virtual private cloud constructs, auto-scaling, and other means to ensure high availability.  Automate environment provisioning and deployment of code, configuration, and containers, including development, continuous integration and test, staging, and production.  Work closely with agile development teams to enable rapid develop/test/deploy cycles and support performance and capacity planning activities.

Travel, outside of that required for professional development training courses, is not anticipated.  Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for off-hour updates or incident response for critical and/or client IT infrastructure.  Much of the off-hour work is planned in advance.



Experience and Skills:

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
  • Two or more years of experience designing and delivering solutions out of public cloud environments, preferably Amazon and/or Rackspace
  • Six to ten years of professional experience in Systems Engineering including Linux and Windows servers, networking equipment, databases,  and production support

 Required Knowledge & Skills:

  •  Strong Linux and Windows operating system administration skills.
  • Strong automation skills related to provisioning, deployment, monitoring, and instrumentation.  Specifically, Chef, Salt, CloudFormation and associated scripting languages.  Experience in continuous delivery environments with Git, Bamboo, and other version control, build and deploy automation is highly desired.
  • Extensive experience in the Amazon Web Services environment designing and deploying solutions that leverage the full range of AWS services including VPC, security groups, S3, Route 53, Cloud Front, ELB, AutoScaling, RDS, ElastiCache, SES, SNS, Multi-AZ deployments and other HA/DR strategies. 
  • Create and maintain tools for day-to-day operatios and 24x7 monitoring.  Solid understanding of service monitoring, SLAs.
  • Experience with cloud migration efforts is highly desirable, including strategy development, design, planning and execution.
  • Security focus in cloud and colo environments, including OS hardening, patching strategies and implementation, intrusion detection and prevention, and security groups.
  • Superior troubleshooting skills including:
    • Ability to localize failures in large, distributed, heterogeneous systems
    • Ability to analyze system and application logging information to investigate and anticipate failure points and to assist development teams in bug resolution
  • Experience with virtualized environments including:
    • Linux KVM
    • Amazon Web Service virtual machine images
  • Professional experience writing scripts in Perl, php, ruby, python and/or various shells.
  • Demonstrated technical system documentation skills.  Create and maintain technical documentation for operational readiness.
  • Knowledge of systems management concepts, processes, and standards
  • Proven experience:
    • deploying and managing hosted PHP and Java Applications
    • running a production LAMP solution stack environment including monitoring, backups, disaster mitigation and recovery
    • developing processes and documentation to support large-scale, hosted applications.
    • supporting server-side Java solutions embedded in the Tomcat application container.

 Additional Knowledge & Skills – preference for candidates with:

  • Familiarity with Java and/or other frameworks (PHP, .NET, Python) to read code and config, follow stack traces, work collaboratively with developers to isolate problems
  • Experience with Application Performance Management solutions such as New Relic and App Dynamics for capacity and performance management, monitoring and tuning.
  • Database administration skills including installation, tuning, backup and recovery of Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL, Postgres both as stand-alone or as services such as AWS RDS.
  • Experience with AWS Direct Connect and other public/private bridging approaches, including VPN.
  • Experience with Atlassian suite of products
  • Conceptual familiarity with open source solutions and how communities operate that use them.
